Argylle director Matthew Vaughn has added yet another film to his growing roster of projects: a musical written by Damien Chazelle.

Here’s a sentence I never imagined I would write in a professional capacity: Matthew Vaughn is set to direct a musical, written by La La Land director Damien Chazelle.

Such a prospect is certainly interesting. We don’t know a whole lot about the project at the moment. Deadline reports the news in a bigger piece on Vaughn and his new film Argylle, which had its world premiere last night (24 Jan) in London and is in UK cinemas from next week.

Argylle follows a novelist, played by Bryce Dallas Howard, who goes on an adventure of a lifetime when her books seem to be coming alive in the real world.

The pairing of Vaughn and Chazelle is a curious, but quite a tempting one, we must say. Chazelle’s latest directorial effort Babylon, a 3-hour epic about the rotten core of Hollywood, received mixed reviews and was considered a box office bomb, so perhaps Chazelle is taking some time away from the director’s chair.

While music has always been a huge part of Chazelle’s filmography – his most successful films are Whiplash and La La Land after all – Vaughn is a newcomer to the genre. Vaughn is best known for films such as Kingsman and Kick-Ass, neither of which feature any dancing or singing (excluding the Elton John-packed curio that is Kingsman: The Golden Circle, of course).

The news comes right on the heels of Vaughn confirming that a third Kick-Ass film is on the way. Kick-Ass 3, while also being the third in its own series, will also be the third part of a completely new franchise. Damien Walters’ School Fight and a mysterious film called Vram will precede Kick-Ass 3. Kick-Ass 3 will hopefully enter production in 2025.

No info on casting, title or release date news for Vaughn’s new musical, but we’ll keep you updated.

Meanwhile, you can catch Argylle in cinemas from 1st February.
