Crikey and, indeed, crivens. Anyone expecting a cosy version of CS Lewis’s much-loved fantasy books – say along the lines of the old 1980s British TV adaptation – might be somewhat taken aback by Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew. Writer-director Greta Gerwig appears to have taken the book of the same name and turned it into a phantasmagorical, dimension-hopping action fantasy.
Or, as some scamp in the YouTube comments puts it, “Narnians Of The Galaxy.”
And you know what? We rather like the look of it. Gerwig’s depiction of a bomb-scarred post-war London provides a tonal counterpoint for the psychedelic worlds beyond. And let’s face it, if we were a pair of kids born into that kind or wreckage, we’d take the first enchanted wardrobe out of there, too, if we could.
David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell play the two young leads, Digory and Polly, while Daniel Craig plays Andrew Ketterley, the eccentric uncle with magical powers. The budget was said to be $200m, and you can certainly see where the money went. And don’t worry, the talking lion does show up, though we regrettably don’t get to hear much of Meryl Streep’s take on Aslan. Also, is it just us or do some bits of this have a modern Doctor Who vibe?
It all looks like the perfect Christmas cinema fodder to us, much like Wonka was a few years back. Regrettably, though, the turkey and crackers will be down the local tip by the time Narnia comes out: once scheduled for a November IMAX run before making its debut on Netflix on Christmas day, it’s since been pushed back to the new year.
Expect to see Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew on the 12th February 2027 in cinemas. Or if you prefer, it makes its Netflix debut on the 2nd April.
Bring on Led Zeppelin!
