Martin Scorsese, whose acting credits include Taxi Driver and Shark Tale, is to make a brief appearance in this May’s Star Wars: The Mandalorian And Grogu.
Yesterday saw the launch of The Mandalorian And Grogu’s latest trailer, which contained a particularly familiar voice: Martin Scorsese.
Within hours, Polygon confirmed that it was indeed Scorsese’s voice heard in the new promo, playing an “Ardennian shopkeeper” – essentially a four-armed monkey who owns a burger van.
“I could use some information,” Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin says to the Scorsese monkey. Spotting a sizeable bribe, the burger-flipping simian initially agrees to tell Djarin whatever he needs; but when the helmeted bounty hunter mentions the Hutts, at which point the van owner promptly shuts up shop.
Scorsese’s acting career stretches back 50 years to Taxi Driver, with other appearances including The King Of Comedy and, most recently, Killers Of The Flower Moon.
His most high-profile role to date might be 2004’s Shark Tale, in which he played Sykes – a pufferfish and fast-talking moneylender.
As well as his acting work, Scorsese has also achieved some success as a filmmaker. His movies include Boxcar Bertha (1972), New York, New York (1977) and Kundun (1997).
Scorsese therefore joins a growing list of filmmakers who’ve appeared in Star Wars movies, either in person or by lending voices to characters. Rian Johnson, Gareth Edwards, Taika Waititi, Werner Herzog and George Lucas are just a few of them.
Lucasfilm’s first Star Wars movie since 2019’s The Rise Of Skywalker, there’s a fair amount of expectation on The Mandalorian And Grogu. The first film in the franchise to be spun off from a Star Wars TV series, it’s hoped that it’ll win back some of the fan goodwill that appeared to ebb towards the end of the 2010s. All being well, it’ll end up as a trilogy of movies – perhaps with Scorsese’s four-armed burger vendor featuring in all of them.
Star Wars: The Mandalorian And Grogu is in UK cinemas from the 22nd May 2026.
