Filming is now underway on Star Wars: Starfighter, with Lucasfilm announcing that Ryan Gosling will be joined by Aaron Pierre, Amy Adams and more besides.
Production has formally begun on Star Wars: Starfighter, the Lucasverse spin-off directed by Deadpool And Wolverine's Shawn Levy. As cameras roll in the UK, Lucasfilm/Disney have announced the sci-fi fantasy’s broader cast – and there are some corking actors lined up.
Alongside the previously-announced Ryan Gosling and Mia Goth, there’s also Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams.
Matt Smith is an interesting addition, since he was originally part of Rise Of Skywalker’s cast before his mystery role was cut (the rumour was that he was set to play the villain, until the decision was made to have Palpatine return, somehow).
Amy Adams and Aaron Pierre are real coups, meanwhile; Adams’ track record speaks for itself, not least her heart breaking performance in Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival. Aaron Pierre is a newer talent, but his lead turn in Jeremy Saulnier’s Rebel Ridge announced him as a formidable young actor. (Another odd Star Wars connection: sequel trilogy star John Boyega was originally cast as the hero in Rebel Ridge, before his abrupt departure prompted Saulnier to pick the lesser-known Pierre.)
Little is known about Starfighter at present beyond it being a “standalone adventure” rather than a numbered sequel. Its title suggests it could be a ‘Top Gun in space’ type adventure – a theory compounded by the reported hiring of Claudio Miranda as director of photography. Miranda previously shot Top Gun Maverick, so it’s possible that Levy’s going for a similarly kinetic yet elegant-looking movie.
Of his film, Levy shared an upbeat yet vague statement on the official Star Wars website.

“I feel a profound sense of excitement and honor as we begin production on Star Wars: Starfighter,” Levy wrote. “From the day Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally. Star Wars shaped my sense of what story can do, how characters and cinematic moments can live with us forever. To join this storytelling galaxy with such brilliant collaborators onscreen and off, is the thrill of a lifetime.”
The blurb is accompanied by a moody monochrome publicity shot (see above) of Gosling and young actor Flynn Gray on what looks like a variant on the traditional Star Wars landspeeder – there’s no domed glass windscreen at the front, so the driver would get a lot of sand in their eyes, for one thing. The worn, industrial backdrop also suggests they’re in some sort of Rebel stronghold.
Star Wars: Starfighter is due for release on the 28th May 2027. Before that, we get The Mandalorian And Grogu, out on the 22nd May 2026.
After years of chaos, the Star Wars movie machine is finally in motion.
