Seth Macfarlane’s foul mouthed Ted will be back for a second series. Here’s what we know about Ted season 2:
TV spin-off Ted, based on the Seth Macfarlane films of the same name, has proved so successful that Peacock has commissioned a second series. The motion capture means that the show is labour intensive and expensive to make – according to some estimates, the budget is pushing $10m an episode – so it could be a while before it hits the screen.
Ted (the TV series) is a prequel set in 1993 which follows the adventures of the titular bear (voiced by Macfarlane) and his 16 year-old best friend John Bennett (Max Burkholder), along with John’s parents, Matty and Susan (Scott Grimes and Alanna Ubach) and cousin Blaire (Giorgia Whigham).
The seven-episode series debuted in January, and was a big deal in the UK as well as the US; according to Deadline, which broke the news about the second season, it was the biggest American comedy to appear on Sky in the past 20 years.
Ted was Seth MacFarlane’s feature directorial debut, and it certainly made an impact. Released in 2012, it contained all the profane, puckish humour complete with cutaway gags that Macfarlane honed in his years showrunning Family Guy. The plot followed Mark Wahlberg as John, an ageing adolescent who spends his time drinking and getting high with the titular Ted, a sentient stuffed toy, while neglecting his relationship with Mila Kunis’ Lori.
The sequel arrived in 2015, and didn’t quite hit the same mark. But it still made a good chunk of money, and that opened the door for a third Ted film. Nine years on, though, and there’s no sign of Ted 3. Instead, Macfarlane took the story to the small screen, and it’s fair to say that he seems to have made the right decision. Ted was the number one original streaming comedy in the U.S. for more than two months, while here in the UK it was the biggest launch of a comedy on Sky in twenty years.
Macfarlane’s other hit show Family Guy recently celebrated its 25th anniversary.
