The Acolyte, the next television series in the Star Wars saga, will premiere on Disney Plus on the 5th June. Here are the details:
In recent years, Star Wars has notched up more hours on the small screen than it did in cinemas. Shows like The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, Ahsoka and The Book Of Boba Fett expanded on the lore of the films, and although critical reception has been mixed, writers are still examining various areas of the Star Wars universe to tell new stories.
Lucasfilm’s latest TV outing, The Acolyte, is out in June, and its synopsis reads as follows:
An investigation into a shocking crime spree pits a respected Jedi Master (Lee Jung-jae) against a dangerous warrior from his past (Amanda Stenberg). As more clues emerge, they travel down a dark path where sinister forces reveal all is not what it seems.
The cast includes Manny Jacinto, Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen & Slim), Dafne Keen (His Dark Materials), Rebecca Henderson (Inventing Anna), Charlie Barnett (Russian Doll), Dean-Charles Chapman (1917) and Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix).
Lesley Headland created the series and serves as showrunner and director of the pilot episode.
In other Star Wars news, season two of Andor recently wrapped filming (season one is heading to 4K disc, too), and Skeleton Crew, the next original Star Wars series, is still awaiting a premiere date.
A Mandolorian feature film is also in the works. The Mandalorian & Grogu will be directed by Jon Favreau and it will see Pedro Pascal reprise the title role.
As if that wasn’t enough, there are also two Star Wars films due in 2026, with another in 2027, though there are scant details on any of those at the moment, except their directors. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Dave Filoni, and James Mangold are attached. Also in various stages of development are films directed by Taika Waititi, Shawn Levy and Rian Johnson. A Lando film starring Donald Glover. When we’ll see any of those is currently anyone’s guess.
The Acolyte will stream on Disney+ from 5th June.
