The story of people trying to remake The Goonies sounds a lot better than people actually remaking The Goonies.

With plans for a belated sequel to The Goonies now seemingly having headed back from whence they came, instead an intriguing new project has come to light surrounding the much-loved 1980s movie. It’s getting a remake, but as a TV show. And it’s  a TV show that follows a bunch of students trying to remake the film.

It’s an idea that’s been given a pilot order by the Fox network in the US, and currently the show doesn’t have a title. It does have some personnel, though, including the director of the original film, Richard Donner, as an executive producer.

Sarah Watson is penning the script for the show, and she’s reportedly the driving force behind it. Greg Mottola, who helmed Superbad and the terrific Adventureland is set to direct the pilot. And then once the pilot is done, it lies with Fox whether it considers the whole venture worthy of a full series.

More news as we get it.
