Cabin In The Woods director Drew Goddard will write and direct a new instalment of The Matrix series. Here are the details.

Writer-director Drew Goddard, perhaps best known for his work on Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Ridley Scott’s The Martian, will write and direct a new instalment of The Matrix franchise for Warner Bros.

It has not yet been confirmed whether Keanu Reeves, Carrie Anne-Moss, Laurence Fishburne, Hugo Weaving or Jada Pinkett Smith are coming back for the fifth film in the franchise. Lana Wachowski is executive producing.

In a statement to Deadline, Goddard said, “It is not hyperbole to say The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life. Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world”.

Jesse Ehrman, Warner Bros Motion Pictures President of Production said, “Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honouring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters. The entire team at Warner Bros Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making this new Matrix film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis’ spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.”

Beginning in 1999, Lana and Lily Wachowski wrote and directed the original trilogy – The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix: Revolutions. In 2021, Lana made fourth film, The Matrix: Resurrections. The first film broke new ground in Hollywood action filmmaking and it launched Keanu Reeves as an action star. It was also where he first worked with his stunt double – future John Wick director Chad Stahelski.

Drew Goddard made his name in television, writing episodes of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Alias and Lost. He moved into feature films with Cloverfield, World War Z and The Martian. He made his directorial debut in 2015 with Cabin In The Woods.
