Via an image of a donut, 20th Century Studios has announced that The Simpsons Movie is getting a sequel in 2027 – 20 years after the original.
Exactly 20 years on from the release of its predecessor, The Simpsons Movie is finally getting a sequel – the currently untitled movie is scheduled for release in July 2027.
20th Century Studios made the announcement via a simple yet effective teaser image on Instagram: “Homer’s coming back for seconds,” the tagline reads, above a pic of Homer’s hand grabbing a ring donut. Then, a date: 23rd July 2027.
In terms of reportable news, that’s about it for now: a title hasn’t been released as yet, nor has 20th Century Studios or Disney released a synopsis or details of who will direct.
One detail spotted by Variety, however, is that the Simpsons film sequel has prompted a bit of a shift in Disney’s scheduling. An untitled Marvel film was once set to occupy that July 2027 slot, but it’s now been removed. What would have been a further comic book adventure between December 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday and December 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars has either been cancelled or postponed.

Conceived by artist Matt Groening and producer James L Brooks, The Simpsons was a hit series for 18 years before the film version finally appeared in cinemas, with development on the big-screen spin-off taking well over a decade. The Simpsons Movie, released in July 2007, was a huge hit, making over $500m; nor was it massively expensive to make, by mainstream animation standards – its budget was a reported $75m.
Its creators haven’t rushed into making a sequel, however, though in retrospect, rumours in 2023 that a follow-up was going to happen clearly had a grain of truth to them. We’ll have to see what form the sequel will take; the series is currently on its 27th season at the time of writing, so there’s a staggering amount of history to draw from. And who knows – maybe its creators will return to one of the movie ideas it previously toyed with but never used. The Bonfire Of The Manatees, anyone?
