Adverts will now be inescapable on Disney+ – even if you’re a Premium tier subscriber, as the streaming platform updates its user agreement.

Joining death and taxes on the certainties of life list, advertising has become a familiar sight on streaming services. Once a haven from the irritation of ads, platforms like Netflix have, in more recent years, begun to look more and more like commercial television.

All of which brings us to Disney+, which has subtly changed its subscriber agreement wording in recent weeks. As pointed out by IGN and Dexerto, the wording means that Disney+ can now show adverts to users in every tier, including the previously ad-free Premium tier.

We’ve had a look at the user agreement ourselves, and the wording has indeed changed for UK subscribers as well. The wording now reads:

Weโ€™ve clarified that all Service Plans may include: (i) promotional content, (ii) sponsorships, and (iii) advertisements before/after playback of Content and in channels, live/as-live, special events, and any third-party services content.

The full subscriber agreement for Disney+ users in the UK can be found on Disney’s website. The wording was updated in June, but emails clarifying the changes went out to users in September.

Currently, Disney+ is available in three tiers: Standard, which costs ยฃ5.99 per month and peppers the screen with ads; Standard, which costs ยฃ9.99 which is ad free; and Premium, which for ยฃ14.99 per month is both ad-free and streams in 4K.

Or at least, that was the case. The new wording from Disney+ suggests that the company is at least reserving the right to start sneaking the odd ad in between its customers’ viewing choices.

There have been signs of late, according to some research, that customers are reaching the limit of what they’re willing to pay for streaming subscriptions. And given the huge cost of making new films and shows for the likes of Netflix or Disney+, those platforms appear to be turning to more adverts as a means of keeping the money rolling in.
