Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons will reunite with director Yorgos Lanthimos for the upcoming movie Bugonia, filming later this year.

Given that Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone’s creative partnership seems as strong as ever, you won’t be surprised to hear that the duo have announced that they will be collaborating once more on Lanthimos’ next film, Bugonia. Also rejoining the fray will be Jesse Plemons who also starred in Lanthimos’ last film, the soon-to-release Kinds Of Kindness.

Here’s what we know about Bugonia so far: according to The Hollywood Reporter, 'the film is based on the 2003 South Korean sci-fi comedy, Save the Green Planet, with the English-language version being produced by Midsommar director Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen at Square Peg.’

The script is by Will Tracy, writer of 2022’s excellent satire, The Menu.

The story follows ‘two conspiracy-obsessed men who kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth.’ Whilst we haven’t seen the South Korean original, the tone of the story sounds just the right kind of bizarre for a Lanthimos project.

While the director may be reuniting with two key collaborators, Lanthimos is leaving Searchlight Pictures for this project, the studio that has backed lots of his films including Oscar winners, Poor Things and The Favourite, not to mention the upcoming Kinds of Kindness. Instead,

Focus Features will be the new home for Bugonia. Shooting for the film is set to take place in New York but also in the UK, apparently. Whether that means our fair island will feature in the actual film though, we don’t yet know.

Kinds Of Kindness releases on 28th June here in the UK and will see Lanthimos reuniting with Stone for a fifth time (if you include Bleat, the 2022 short film they made together). Plemons also features in the film which is said to be an anthology film of sorts although in typical Lanthimos fashion we’re expecting his use of this structure to be suffused with that trademark weirdness. When we hear more about Bugonia, including further casting or production/release dates, we’ll let you know.
