Stieg Larsson’s Millennium novels, particularly The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, has been adapted a few times already, but you can’t have too much of a good thing, right?
Sky has announced today that a new adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s novel is in the works. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo will comprise eight episodes and is described as a “bold and contemporary reimagining” by Sky.
Steve Lightfoot and Angela LaManna will write and executive produce the project, which is set to start filming in Lithuania this Spring. No word on when The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo might make its way to our screens, but with production starting so soon, 2027 seems like a solid guess. There’s also no news on who might star in the series.
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is the first of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy of novels, and follows investigative journalist Mikael Blomqvist who teams up with troubled hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate the disappearance of a woman 40 years earlier. The original novel and its 2009 Swedish film adaptation were titled Män Som Hatar Kvinnor, translating to Men Who Hate Women, but the title was changed for English-language audiences. Make of that what you will.
The 2009 film was directed by Niels Arden Oplev and made Noomi Rapace into an international star. Thanks to the film’s popularity, Hollywood followed suit rather quickly. David Fincher adapted the story in 2011 with Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara starring, and it’s a film that doesn’t get mentioned enough when talking about Fincher’s finest works – despite the acclaim it received at the time.
Fede Alvarez went on to direct a sequel, The Girl In The Spider’s Web, in 2018 with Claire Foy taking over the role of Salander, but the film was met with negative reviews and effectively killed the franchise.
Equally dead seems to be the TV series once being developed by Amazon. Last we heard of it was in 2023 when Veena Sud was announced as showrunner, but it doesn’t seem like this one has managed to move forward.
As you might have guessed from the novel’s original title, the story has some pretty heavy themes that seem to have only grown in relevance since its last adaptations. Hopefully Sky’s new adaptation won’t shy away from them.
