James Gunn is heading back to Metropolis in 2027 with a sequel to this summer’s Superman, titled Man Of Tomorrow.
James Gunn, the new ruler of DC Studios, won’t be resting on his laurels after the (somewhat mild) success of this year’s Superman. The director’s first trip to Metropolis was met with enthusiastic reviews and word of mouth, even if the box office didn’t exactly impress.
Gunn is still looking ahead. As reported yesterday by all major outlets (we’re reading Deadline for this), a sequel to Superman is heading to cinemas on 9th July 2027. The sequel, which will bring back David Corenswet’s titular hero and Nicholas Hoult’s iconic baddie Lex Luthor, will be titled Man Of Tomorrow.
The film will be written and directed by Gunn, who seems very busy these days, co-running a studio and all that.
Gunn, Corenswet and Hoult all shared some artwork for the new film, showing off Luthor in his Warsuit. All three images are original drawings by Jim Lee, a legendary comic book artist and the Chief Creative Officer of DC Comics.
Naturally, Gunn is keeping quiet about any plot points the sequel might follow, but we can assume there’s going to be a big showdown between Lex and Supes.
Before Man Of Tomorrow, DCU fans will have next year’s Supergirl and Clayface to look forward to, but 2027 looks to be a big year for comic book fans. Man Of Tomorrow joins Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II, Sony’s Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse and Marvel’s Avengers: Secret Wars in the year’s already packed schedule of major blockbuster titles.
This summer’s box office numbers have been somewhat disappointing. Both Superman and Marvel’s Fantastic Four: The First Steps failed to make much of an impact and only Lilo & Stitch managed to reach that coveted $1bn mark of this summer’s Hollywood blockbusters.
