You’re likely – certainly if you’re a multiplex cinema visitor – very familiar with the collectable popcorn bucket trend. That, to try and squeeze a few more quid off you, studios and multiplex chains design ever more elaborate popcorn receptacles (or, let’s face, it sometimes just slap a logo/picture on the side of a tin).

Things might just have come to a bit of a peak though, with Universal’s reveal of special popcorn containers to tie into Christopher Nolan’s upcoming The Odyssey.

Comfortably one of the most anticipated features of the summer season, it’s not the easiest of films to sell collectable tat around. Fair play to Universal though, because it’s damn well given it a go.

In the US, collectable popcorn containers have thus now been announced. Once is of an IMAX camera, which is admirably film nerd-y. But it’s this one that’s got my attention.

The Odyssey popcorn bucket

I am, at heart, a simple man. But I like to think that the core reason for a popcorn container to exist is, well, to hold popcorn. Here, accepting I’ve not held the thing in my hands, but also accepting that this is the promo shot they’ve chosen to send out, I can’t help thinking that somebody forgot the popcorn bit.

Notwithstanding the fact that it’s unwieldly to hold when you’re also trying to smuggle snacks down your trousers/carry a drink/wave your tickets around, unless the horse has secret compartments I dare not dream about, it looks like you’re getting a depletion in popcorn rations. That, or the popcorn will be served with a small amount in the horse – let’s call him Neddy – and the rest thrown on the floor around him.

I confess I’ve never been one for the novelty popcorn bucket trend but finally, they’ve reeled me in. Such as an experiment in physics, I’d be fascinating to give it a try. It should be a Taskmaster episode or something: how much popcorn can you shove in Neddy?

The Odyssey arrives in cinemas in July. It’s nearly three hours long, and Neddy absolutely does not have you covered.
