This week, the film adaptation of Richard Osman’s zillion-copy-selling The Thursday Murder Club arrives in a few cinemas, ahead of its broader release on Netflix next week.

The film brings together a hell of a cast, led by Dame Helen Mirren, Sir Ben Kingsley, Should Be Queen Celia Imrie and famed international singer Pierce Brosnan. Working from a screenplay from Katy Brand and Suzanne Heathcote, the film is based on the first of Osman’s books, but there are plenty more still to adapt. To date, he’s penned five in the series (the fifth, The Impossible Fortune, is released in September), and that leaves a trail of tales to refashion for the screen should this first film work.

Chris Columbus chatted to Film Stories earlier in the summer, and he’s confirmed that the plan is very much to look towards a sequel.

I didn’t actually ask him directly, but instead, was quizzing him about a shot he completed for The Thursday Murder Club that he’d talked about when conducting interviews for a film he produced, Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu. Columbus had talked at the time about how Eggers had brought in a camera crane for a particular interior shot and it’d influenced Columbus to do the same when directing The Thursday Murder Club. Thing is, that particular shot barely made it to the final cut of the film.

I asked about it, and Columbus was deliberately spoiler-light. “I don’t want to talk about the beginning of that scene, because the beginning will actually be utilised – if we’re lucky enough, and all signs seem to point in that direction that we will be shooting a sequel or the next chapter –  in the second movie.”

He didn’t explicitly say that he’d be directing the second movie himself, but also, he was talking about using a shot he’d captured for the first in the second, so he’s hardly ruling it out either.

Inevitably, much depends on the response and success of the incoming The Thursday Murder Club movie. You can read more about it in the UK’s biggest film magazine, Film Stories, right here.

And here’s our previous interview with Columbus, from around the time of Nosferatu's release…
