Here’s a piece of news that will come as a surprise to absolutely no one. Warner Bros has officially greenlit a sequel to this year’s hit, A Minecraft Movie.
Based on the wildly popular videogame, A Minecraft Movie grossed nearly $1bn at the global box office after its April premiere. News of a sequel seemed inevitable, but Warner Bros has held off announcing one for some time now.
A Minecraft Movie 2 will hit cinemas on 23rd July 2027. Jared Hess will return to direct, as reported by Variety. Hess will also co-write the script with Chris Galletta, but there’s no word on whether any of the cast will return for the sequel.
The first film starred Jack Black, Jason Momoa and Danielle Brooks, and followed a group of people who get stuck in a cubic world filled with monsters. Thankfully, they encountered an “expert crafter” who can help them get home.
Critics didn’t warm to the film, but A Minecraft Movie grossed well above expectations during its opening weekend. The film also started the so-called Chicken Jockey Trend, which saw audience members jump around, clap and throw popcorn when Jack Black’s character yelled “Chicken Jockey!”
Despite such a rapturous reception and impressive box office numbers, A Minecraft Movie headed to digital just a month after its premiere. A physical release followed a month later.
Videogame movies are all the rage at the moment. Zach Cregger is busy working on his Resident Evil adaptation, while Until Dawn, Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 and Mortal Kombat 2 and a second season of Prime Video’s Fallout are also on the way.
When A Minecraft Movie 2 arrives in 2027, we’re hoping any following internet trends will be quieter and won’t involve being covered in someone else’s popcorn and overpriced Diet Coke.
