Prime Video is planning a new TV series adaptation of The Wizard Of Oz that’ll work as a metaphor for the troubles of youth. Here’s more on Dorothy.
Last year’s Wicked Part One was a massive success – we were certainly big fans of it – and this year’s Wicked: For Good will complete the story of Elphaba and Galinda. The second film, while bringing Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande back for the main parts, will also feature another familiar character; Dorothy from The Wizard Of Oz.
There’s no word on who might be playing Dorothy in For Good, but now there’s another job opening for those wishing to play the iconic part, first played by Judy Garland in the 1939 movie.
Deadline reports that Prime Video is currently working on a new adaptation of The Wizard Of Oz. Instead of a film, the project is a TV series, currently simply titled Dorothy, and it’ll be aimed at a much younger audience. Deadline writes that the yellow brick road will be used as a metaphor for the challenges of youth today.
The project is coming from showrunner Gina Matthews, who says she’s always been a big fan of the yellow brick road.
“I’ve been in love with The Wizard of Oz books since I was a child,” Matthew explained. “The story reminds us of the qualities we need to get through hard times, and Dorothy is a symbol of strength who shows us that with a little kindness — and a lot of grit — we can not only achieve great things but also lift up those around us. I’m excited to bring that message to the world, now more than ever.”
Dorothy is also said to be heavily music-infused, which makes sense since the show counts Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton as producers.
“We’re really excited about all the possibilities this show brings, and I’m so grateful that Gina shared the idea with me and Lee,” said Shelton. “I knew right away it was something Gwen would connect with. Her creativity and perspective are such a natural fit for this project.”
Stefani added: “It’s a creative and modern take on a classic, and being part of something that blends music, emotion, and the character of Dorothy is inspiring to me.”
No word on when Prime Video is looking to start production, but they’ll likely want to move fast while Wicked is still in people’s minds (and up for awards…).
