The creators of hit TV series Cobra Kai are tackling another bit of 1980s nostalgia – vehicular show Knight Rider.

Yes, the unusual friendship between a crime fighting agent and his strangely posh talking car, KITT, could be making a return – this time to the big screen.
The creators of hit series Cobra Kai – a spin-off from the much-loved 1984 martial arts drama, The Karate Kid – are said to be in early talks to make a movie out of Knight Rider, a TV show that first aired in 1982.
Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald first created Cobra Kai in 2018, initially as a series for YouTube Red. Starring William Zabka and Ralph Macchio reprised their roles from the original movie, and the show proved to be such a successful mix of comedy, nostalgia and heartfelt drama that it ran for six seasons, eventually moving to Netflix between 2021 and 2025.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the trio will write the screenplay while Hurwitz and Schlossberg will direct, and assuming all goes to plan, the resulting Knight Rider movie will be distributed by Universal Pictures.
The original Knight Rider starred David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight, a former undercover cop given a new face and a new identity as a high-tech crime buster at the acronym-loving unit, FLAGG. Knight’s sidekick in the show – and if you were a kid in the 1980s, the main reason to watch – was KITT, a black Pontiac Firebird fitted with an artificially-intelligent computer voiced by William Daniels.
Given how well Cobra Kai fused its affection for the 1980s with some superbly-written character work, its creators are a logical fit to adapt another vintage artefact for a new audience. There have been previous attempts to update Knight Rider for different generations, including the 1991 TV movie Knight Rider 2000 and late 1990s series Team Knight Rider. None are as fondly remembered as the original 1982 run.
