Sucker Punch | Zack Snyder’s planning a director’s cut of this one too

He might not get his wish, but Zack Snyder is keen to shoot more footage for a Sucker Punch do-over.

I know one person precisely who’s a massive fan of Zack Snyder’s 2011 movie Sucker Punch. I know lots of people who are, well, less keen.

Amongst the many films that Snyder has made, it’s the one that’s got the worse reviews (now that Justice League has been sorted out anyway). It’s also the one that’s hit the most disappointing levels at the box office too. You could be forgiven for thinking that Zack Snyder would just walk away from it, and get on with his myriad of other projects.

But that, chums, is not the Zack Snyder way. His new films, the two Rebel Moon movies, are arriving with extended cuts pretty much built in. Now, he’s talking about Sucker Punch also getting a revisit.

Snyder had previously argued that Sucker Punch is “probably the most obvious example of straightforward, pure satire that I’ve made”. Yet he laments that he doesn’t feel he went far enough, “because a lot of people thought that it was just a movie about scantily clad girls dancing around in a brothel”.

Snyder had the cut back on his planned ending for the film, and also had to cut it down to hit a softer rating. The version that arrived in cinemas, and left shortly thereafter, was not what he’d consider his director’s cut. As such, he’s now been talking to Warner about another look at the film.

Snyder has also cut an extended version of the film, but in a chat with Inverse, he argues that “it’s not the fully realized movie”. That’s what he’s trying to sort out, and conversations are ongoing with Warner Bros about a proper revisit.

This would involve reshoots though, and that’s going to be logistically taxing and not on the cheap side. Given that it’s over a decade since he actually shot the film, there’s the smaller matter that all of his actors have got a little bit older too.

Appreciating that Warner Bros (eventually) spent $70m to let Snyder retool Justice League, it still feels like an incredibly long shot that he’d get the go ahead to rework Sucker Punch. But who knows in this day and age?

We’ll tell more as we hear it. And also if we hear anything of the big question: will Snyder get to Legend of the Guardians: The Owls Of Ga’Hoole next? Release the Owl Cut…
