We’ve been waiting for news on The Wild Robot 2 ever since we saw The Wild Robot in 2024. A sequel was already in early development before the film even landed on UK screens, but it’s been awfully quiet since then. Thankfully, our patience has finally been rewarded.
The Wrap (via Dark Horizons here) reports that a sequel has officially been greenlit at DreamWorks. Chris Sanders, who directed the first film, will be back to write the script but is relinquishing directing duties to Troy Quane and Heidi Jo Gilbert.
The story will be based on the second book in The Wild Robot series, The Wild Robot Escapes. In it, our favourite robot Roz finds herself on a dairy farm but keeps missing her life on the island. The title suggests she might be making a run for it and we’re willing to bet she’ll get into all kinds of trouble and adventures.
The first film’s voice cast was stacked to say the least. Lupita Nyong’o voiced Roz while Kit Connor was Brightbill, a barnacle goose and both appear in the sequel, so it would make sense for the two to return, but no news on that yet. The first film also attracted actors like Bill Nighy, Stephanie Hsu, Pedro Pascal and the late, great Catherine O’Hara to lend their voices to Sanders’ film. We’ll see if the sequel gathers a voice cast just as impressive.
The Wild Robot scored $334.5 million at the global box office on a relatively small budget of $78 million. It also garnered three Oscar nominations and, to give you a quick read of the room, it has a whopping 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
