Nathan Fielder’s secret Elizabeth Holmes documentary You Can See Everything has screened at Telluride Film Festival. Here’s the trailer from A24:

Making a film in secret is no easy feat, but Nathan Fielder – previously known for such comedies as Nathan For You and The Curse – has not only managed that, but also managed to make a documentary about a high profile person waiting to go to jail.

You Can See Everything, Fielder’s documentary about Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, was just screened at Telluride Film Festival over the weekend (6th September). The audience in attendance didn’t know what they were about to watch as they sat down, but were rewarded with a 174-minute documentary about the controversial businesswoman. Vanity Fair reports on the event here.

Holmes founded her company Theranos in 2003 and promised to revolutionise health technology, particularly blood testing, but a 2015 Wall Street Journal investigation eventually revealed that her machines didn’t work as advertised. Holmes was eventually convicted of fraud and sentenced to over 11 years in prison.

Just days before Holmes is due to step behind bars, Fielder documents Holmes and her husband Billy’s life with unprecedented access. Here’s the trailer:

“I’m not that person, I can promise you that,” Holmes tells Fielder on camera with an eerie smile. In fact, the whole 77-second trailer has a very eerie feel, and Fielder is visibly uncomfortable as the pair sit in a living room and Elizabeth’s child is in a baby rocker beside them.

The film is co-directed by Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, who has just premiered Primetime at Venice Film Festival. The pair struggled to find people to talk to or to appear in the documentary, citing that Elizabeth Holmes is “toxic”.

Fielder didn’t just show up at the Holmes’ doorstep with a camera crew every morning, either; the filmmaker actually moved into their home for the days leading up to Elizabeth’s imprisonment. During a Q&A after the screening at Telluride, Fielder told moderator Emma Stone just how bizarre the whole experience was.

“I really am struggling to this day to understand exactly what I experienced,” Fielder said. “And one of the things I’m genuinely excited about is for this movie to come out and for people to help me understand what I experienced. Truly, to this day, I don’t quite know what I went through.”

Holmes’ story has been retold in podcast form with The Dropout and the 2022 miniseries based on it, in which Amanda Seyfried played Holmes. The actress won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for the role.

A24 is releasing the film in the US this October. No release plans for the UK are known at this point, but we’ll keep an eye on that and update you accordingly.
