David Zaslav’s tenure at Warner Bros is coming to an end, and he’s penned a farewell, while he gets ready to take home hundreds of millions of dollars.

With the completion of the Paramount and Warner Bros merger, one of the most culturally damaging studio tenures arguably in Hollywood history has come to an end.

David Zaslav took over the top job at Warner Bros Discovery in 2022, and now departs the role with the company in a very different place. Under his tenure, plans to bring down the overall organisation’s debt didn’t really get anywhere, but it didn’t stop Zaslav slashing staff numbers while pocketing an increasing salary as he did so.

Arguably the most damning part of his legacy won’t be the films that we saw under his stewardship, but the ones we didn’t. Zaslav earned himself a reputation as a culture vandal when, instead of releasing the pretty much completed films Batgirl and Scoob: Holiday Haunt back in 2023, he instead decided to ‘delete’ them in exchange for a short term tax write off.

It was then and is now a disgraceful decision. Those films can never see the light of day legally, without Warner Bros paying back the money. Zaslav has defended it as the right call, and tried the same trick again with Coyote Vs Acme. That, somehow, managed to escape Warner Bros in the end, on the way to rich acclaim and good box office.

Zaslav’s reward for his work is, of course, more money than any who worked under him at the studio could ever dream of having. Few would describe his tenure as a success, not least with it ending up with the studio being swallowed up effectively by a rival.

Still, he’ll be taking home hundreds of millions of dollars once the deal is done. So that’s okay then.

Zaslav has reportedly recorded a farewell video for Warner Bros Discovery employees, of which Deadline has picked up a transcript. Here’s a taste.

“For me, it’s been a great honour to be alongside all of you. I hope you take pride in what you’ve built, what you’ve created, and the role you’ve played in shaping an extraordinary history.

What’s past is prologue. The future waits for each and every one of you. For your spirit, your ingenuity, your creativity and your courage.

I can’t wait to see what you do in the years ahead. I’m so grateful for all these years at Warner Bros. Discovery, for the wonderful experiences creating content, telling stories, and getting to know so many of you. Thank you so much.”

Hmmm.

It seems fitting to give the final word here to Michael Kurinsky, the director of Scoob: Holiday Haunt, in an interview I did with him a year or so ago. This is more Zaslav’s legacy, for my money…
