Reports of Dwayne Johnson peeing in bottles on the set of Red One have been firmly, er, admitted to, it seems.
Earlier this year, a report over at The Wrap suggested that there was a bit of trouble behind the scenes of festive blockbuster Red One. Directed by Jake Kasdan, and starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans, the resultant film turned out pretty well, and it’s been doing some solid box office numbers as well.
Now, ahead of its American release, Dwayne Johnson has done an interview with GQ, and certain allegations have been put to him.
Going back to that original report, it was said that Johnson turned up to set late regularly, and also urinated in water bottles to save time, ‘upsetting crew members’. The lateness was said to have been as much as eight hours, and seemed to be familiar to those who’d worked on previous Dwayne Johnson movies.
Poppycock, says Johnson. Well, sort of. In a curious pushback, he told GQ that the controversy was “bullshit”. “I’ve said at thousand times, hey, I’m here, come and ask me. And I’ll tell you the truth”.
Right then. Dwayne Johnson, do you arrive late to set? “Yeah, that happens”, he told the outlet. “But not that amount, by the way”, specifically addressing the eight hours figure. The Wrap had suggested that his tardiness had added up to $50m to the budget, incidentally.
GQ then clarified: Dwayne Johnson, do you pee in bottles on set to try and save some time? “Yeah”.
Fair play to the man. He said he’s there, to come and ask him. They asked him. He, er, confirmed a pair of the headline facts of the story.
It’s worth noting that personnel on Red One, including Jake Kasdan and Chris Evans, have very much come to Dwayne Johnson’s defence here. But also, that Johnson has also confirmed at least some of what the original report was saying.
Red One is in cinemas in the UK now.
