The sci-fi drama Klara And The Sun, adapted from Kazuro Ishiguro’s novel, will finally come out in 2026 says director Taika Waititi.

As well as being quizzed about his still-at-large Star Wars movie, director Taika Waititi has also been asked about the status of another of his projects: sci-fi adaptation Klara And The Sun.

Based on the novel of the same name by the eminent novelist Kazuro Ishiguro, it finished filming in April 2024, but little has been heard from the production since.

When asked about it by Screen Daily, however, Waititi said it’s “coming soon, this year for sure.”

He then added that he’s been talking to its distributor, Sony, about “when and where” that release might happen. “We’re thinking about festivals and stuff like that,” he added.

Set in a future of isolated, genetically-engineered kids taught about the world via laptops, Klara And The Sun is told from the perspective of the titular Klara – one of an army of artificially-intelligent androids built as companions for a generation of lonely youths.

Jenna Ortega will play Klara; Mia Tharia will play Josie, one of those genetically-engineered, lonely kids, while Amy Adams, Natasha Lyonne and Steve Buscemi are in supporting roles.

The novel has the same melancholy tone as Ishiguro’s other foray into science fiction, Never Let Me Go – a story adapted superbly by director Mark Romanek and Alex Garland. Released in 2010, it starred early-in-their-careers Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley, Andrew Garfield and Ella Purnell. One of those films that has long since slipped out of the cultural conversation, it’s well worth tracking down.

Waititi received awards for his WWII-set black comedy Jojo Rabbit in 2019, which was flanked by the antic Marvel films Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love And Thunder. Maybe Klara will see the filmmaker in a more introspective mode.

Klara And The Sun was rated PG-13 by the MPAA last November. By the sounds of things, its release should be only a few more months away now.
